How to Choose a Wedding Photographer

When it comes to your wedding, every aspect is important. Finding the right wedding photographer takes time and care, these are photos you will look at for the rest of your life. Finding your venue should be the first step in the wedding planning process. After you’ve found the venue, and set a date, you’ll start to think about vendors like food, flowers, and a photographer.

Selecting a wedding photographer is amongst the most important decisions you’ll make in the planning process. During your wedding you want to live in the moment, so you want a photographer who captures all the best moment without you having to worry about it. It is also important to find a photographer who gets your style. Luckily there are many options available, you can find someone with your style in your price range. You may find want a more traditional photographer, whose strength lies in capturing group portraits and posed moments. Or you might be looking for a photographer who will take great candid photos and capture the best moments of the day exactly as they happened. Maybe you’re looking for someone with a vintage style or a more modern look. The point is, there are plenty of options and regardless of the style you’re most fond of, a good wedding photographer should have a quality portfolio that excites you for what your own photos will look like.

A good starting place for your research is your venue’s preferred vendor list. Whether they recommend these partners formally or not, venues always have photographers that they know and are comfortable with. Recommendations from your friends or family is also a great way to find the perfect photographer for your wedding.

As far as pricing, it depends on a number of circumstances. Do you want an engagement shoot? Do you need a second photographer? This will depend largely on how many guests you have, we recommend that you heed your photographer’s advice regarding this. How many photos do you want? How many hours of coverage are necessary? Expanding upon and cutting down on these options have a huge effect on the budget. Most photographers will provide recommended packages and additional add-on options. At the lowest end, you should expect to pay $3,500 for a good quality wedding photographer. If you have a second shooter, coverage of the full event will likely be somewhere between $5,000 and $7,000. If this is out of your budget, don’t worry. Like we said earlier, there are always options. Be sure to ask about seasonal pricing. As with every type of vendor, wedding photographers have off-seasons, so a package in January may be priced lower than in June or July.

One final and important piece of advice, make sure you like your wedding photographer because they’re going to spend a lot of time around you on your big day so don’t pick someone who will ruin it for you!
